What is Personal Branding?

Personal branding according to wikipedia is the process whereby people and their careers are marked as brand.

Personal branding often involves the application of a persons name to various products. For example, celebrity Oprah Winfrey is a great example who uses her first name extensively on her shows and magazine products she endorse. Some celebrities are synonymous with their brands for example Richard Branson and Virgin.

Branding is not a new thing, we have all had exposure to some types of branding in our lives, think of the symbols and logos of Macdonalds, Coca Cola, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Colonel Sanders, Microsoft. Yes they are all forms of branding that are now well know globally.

What is OIM?

Also known as Online Image Management, or Online Identity Management (OIM), or Personal Reputation Management, this is a set of methods for creating a wider Web presence of a person on the Internet. Mostly done by participation in blogs and forums, news releases, social media sites, videos and the like.

Improving the quality and quantity of traffic to sites that have content related to a person is one area of the online identity management (OIM) process. OIM is a part of another online approach called search engine optimisation or better known as SEO, only the keyword term is  the person's name, and the optimisation object is not necessary a single web site; it can bring back a set of completely different sites that contain positive online references about the person whom you searched for. 

The objective  of OIM   is to get high rankings for as many online sites as possible when someone searches for a person's name.The idea behind this is to ensure that you dominate your own name by creating articles, blogs, press releases etc and posting them to various sites on the internet.

Another aspect has to do with impression management, i.e. “the process through which people try to control the impressions other people form of them”. One of the objective is in particular to increase the online reputation of the person.
