Over 7 years ago I joined my very first MLM company selling pills and potions. It was very difficult for me as I had never marketed or sold anything in my life. I had to get over my phobia of talking to strangers on the phone who wanted to buy my products,as well as get the hang of being a mentor and leader talking to people who wanted to join me and my team.

The learning curve was high on both sides. I had to learn all about the products, what they did, what they were good for and how they should be used. I also had to learn about the business I was in, what the compensation plan was all about and what to say to recruit new people. Does this all sound familiar?

Some of my key mistakes were:

a) Overselling the sale - It didn't sink in to me that clients who go out of their way to contact you do not need to be sold on your product. They probably need additional information and that is why they are contacting you, but they have already been sold, they have done their research and are now trying to find out if you are the right person they can trust to purchase from.

What I learned: 8 times out of ten they just want reassurance and additional information before going all out to purchase products from you. There was a great book I read by Kim Klaver- If My Products Are So Good How Come I Can't Sell It which helped me to improve my selling techniques. It's available on Amazon, or you can click on the title of the book above.

b) Desperate for Recruits- Boy, do I feel stupid at this one. I was so desperate for people to join my team, that I accepted everyone and anyone into my team at first. It wasn't a surprise therefore that half of the people I recruited only lasted a month or two.

What I learned:I learnt that when looking for recruits if you draw up a job description for your company / position, this will help guide you when you are interviewing them. Let's face it, they want to sign up with you, to work with you, so if you are not compatible with what you are looking for in the first instance you are less likely to hit it off and for the partnership to be a long lasting one. Mike Dillard's MagneticSponsoring e-course really got me on track attracting leads and then learning how to talk to them with authority and leadership to get them queuing up to join my organisation.

c) Plan, what plan?? - yes, I know it seems mad, but I didn't have a Business Plan in place. All oflline businesses have a business plan, so why not your online business. If you wanted to lend money from the back you would need a valid business case. Plus the business case acts as a reminder of your goals, your objectives of where you want your business to be in the next 3 - 5 years.

What I learned: Having no direction made it difficult for me to see where my business was going month after month. The CarbonCopyPro Business In A Box really helped me to focus on where I was going and how I am to get there.

Finally...

If you can stick it out for the first year, then you will have made it further than most.  Network Marketing and MLM Marketing takes time to learn, like any profession, you are not going to pick this up overnight.  When you go for a new job, something you have never done before,it takes time to get yourself familiar with what you have to do. It takes time to learn that job description, and in some cases make it your own.  Having someone who is a god mentor and coach can propel you far quickly.  What ever you do, do your due diligence before signing up with just anyone.  Make sure you have a good system in place to aid you with your marketing techniques.
